Critical Mass Strain Overview
Critical Mass was created by Mr. Nice Seeds as a cross between Afghani and Skunk #1. The name refers to the point at which the weight of the buds becomes so great that branches snap under their own load — a testament to its extraordinary yield potential. It is one of the most commercially successful strains in European markets.
The effects are deeply relaxing and sedative with a sweet, earthy, citrus aroma. THC sits at 18-22% with notable CBD in some phenotypes providing medical value for pain and anxiety. For related heavy-yielding indica grow strategies, see our Big Bud guide and Northern Lights guide.
Growing Conditions for Critical Mass
Critical Mass is an excellent indoor strain due to its compact stature, fast flowering, and ease of management. It stays short and bushy — ideal for grow tents with limited headroom. Temperatures should be maintained at 20-26°C with humidity at 50-60% in veg and 40-45% in late flower. Low humidity in flowering is critical because the enormous dense buds are highly susceptible to Botrytis.
Branch support is non-negotiable: use bamboo stakes or a trellis net before buds begin to swell. Critical Mass responds well to the Sea of Green technique. It is a moderate feeder — follow a standard NPK schedule with boosted P and K during weeks 4-7 of flower. The Sea of Green guide and grow tent setup guide are useful references.
Flowering and Harvest
Critical Mass finishes in just 7-8 weeks of 12/12 light — one of the fastest photoperiod strains available. This makes it ideal for growers wanting multiple harvests per year. Outdoor plants are ready in late September before autumn rains — perfect timing to avoid mold.
Indoor yields of 500-550g/m2 are achievable under a 600W HPS or equivalent LED. The final 10 days see dramatic bud swelling. Harvest when trichomes are mostly cloudy with a few amber heads for a balanced relaxing effect. Ensure excellent airflow during the final weeks due to bud density. After harvest, dry slowly at 15-18°C and cure in jars for 4-6 weeks as described in our drying and curing guide.
Tips and Troubleshooting
Bud rot is the number one enemy of Critical Mass growers. Keep humidity below 45% in the second half of flowering, run a strong oscillating fan directly across the canopy, and inspect buds daily in the final two weeks. Remove any infected material immediately and do not compost it.
Critical Mass does not need aggressive training due to its naturally compact shape, but topping once in early veg increases cola sites significantly. It is beginner-friendly in most respects — forgiving of minor nutrient imbalances and resilient in temperatures between 18-28°C. Outdoor growers in humid climates should harvest at the first signs of ripeness rather than waiting for maximum amber trichomes to avoid mold risk.
