Big Bud Strain Overview
Big Bud is a legendary indica-dominant strain developed by Sensi Seeds in the 1980s. Originally bred in the USA before being preserved in the Netherlands, it combines Afghani, Northern Lights, and Skunk #1 genetics — three of cannabis's most reliable powerhouses. It became one of the most award-winning strains of its generation.
The strain produces dense, resinous buds that can weigh down branches significantly. Effects are deeply relaxing and sedative, popular for evening use and stress relief. THC sits between 15-20%. For related indica growing strategies, see our Northern Lights grow guide and OG Kush guide.
Growing Conditions for Big Bud
Big Bud thrives in controlled indoor environments. Maintain temperatures between 20-26°C during the day and drop to 18-20°C at night during late flower to enhance resin production. Humidity should sit at 50-60% in veg and drop to 40-45% in flowering to prevent mold on the dense buds.
Because the colas grow so large, branch support is essential — use bamboo stakes or a SCROG net to prevent snapping. Big Bud responds exceptionally well to Sea of Green. Use a balanced NPK nutrient schedule with extra potassium and phosphorus during flower. Calcium and magnesium supplements are highly recommended. The cannabis nutrients guide covers dosing in detail.
Flowering and Harvest
Big Bud finishes flowering in 8-9 weeks indoors under a 12/12 light schedule. Outdoor plants are ready in late September to early October. Indoor growers regularly achieve 500-600g/m2 under a 600W HPS or quality LED setup.
Watch trichomes carefully: harvest when 70-80% of trichomes are milky white with a few amber heads for a relaxing body effect. The colas swell dramatically in the final two weeks. Flush with plain water for 5-7 days before harvest. After harvest, a slow dry and cure of 4-6 weeks brings out Big Bud's sweet, earthy terpene profile fully.
Tips and Troubleshooting
The biggest challenge with Big Bud is bud rot. Keep a strong oscillating fan blowing across the canopy and ensure your extraction system maintains negative pressure in the tent. If you spot any grey fuzz on a bud, remove it immediately and lower humidity below 45%.
Big Bud is a heavy feeder but sensitive to nutrient burn in early veg. Start at 50% of recommended nutrient doses and increase gradually. Topping and low-stress training in veg increases lateral branching and maximizes bud sites. Avoid aggressive defoliation late in flower. pH your water to 6.0-6.5 in soil and 5.8-6.0 in hydro for optimal nutrient uptake.
