About Schöneberg Social Cannabis
Schöneberg has one of the most distinctive identities of any Berlin neighbourhood. The district is internationally known as the historic heart of Berlin’s LGBTQ+ community — centred on Nollendorfplatz and the Motzstraße axis, Schöneberg has been a safe haven for queer Berlin since the 1920s, surviving everything from Nazi persecution to post-war conservatism to emerge as one of the world’s most celebrated LGBTQ+ neighbourhoods. Schöneberg Social Cannabis is explicitly LGBTQ+-friendly and operates with the inclusive, community-affirming values that define the district.
The intersection of LGBTQ+ culture and cannabis culture in Berlin is long-established. Cannabis has been part of Schöneberg’s social scene for decades. Legalisation, for many Schöneberg residents, represents the formal acknowledgement of a reality that already existed — and the CSC model provides a community-governed structure for that reality.
Schöneberg Social Cannabis maintains an explicitly welcoming environment for all members regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, age, or background. The club’s governance documents include anti-discrimination commitments, and its member communications are written to be inclusive and accessible.
The club is also notable for its harm reduction resources, including information on cannabis interactions with common medications, guidance on responsible use for people with anxiety or mental health considerations, and connections to Berlin’s broader harm reduction and LGBTQ+ health networks.
Understanding German Cannabis Law for Visitors
Germany’s cannabis reform came in two stages. The Konsumcannabisgesetz (KCanG), effective 1 April 2024, legalised personal possession for adults 18+: up to 25g in public, 50g at home, and 3 plants. The Cannabisanbaugesetz (CanG), effective 1 July 2024, created the legal framework for non-commercial Cannabis Social Clubs.
For international visitors, this means there is currently no legal way to purchase cannabis in Germany. There are no licensed retail dispensaries. Cannabis tourists who arrive expecting an Amsterdam-style experience will not find it. What does exist is a growing civil-society network of CSCs, primarily accessible to German residents, pioneering a genuinely non-commercial, community-centred cannabis culture.

For International Travellers
If you are visiting Berlin and interested in cannabis culture, personal possession of up to 25g is legal for adults 18+. However, purchasing cannabis remains illegal as there are no retail shops. Cannabis Social Clubs are not accessible to tourists. Consume only in private and be aware that public consumption is restricted near schools, playgrounds, and pedestrian zones.
