Mumbai Airport and Drug Screening
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) is India’s busiest international gateway and has NCB liaison officers embedded in customs and immigration. Drug detection dogs operate in both arrival and departure terminals. The NCB’s Mumbai Zonal Unit has a documented presence at the airport and has made cannabis-related arrests in the terminal area.
Travellers who have used cannabis — including legal bhang — should ensure they have adequate clearance time and that their luggage contains no residue. This applies even if your cannabis use in India was limited to legal bhang or compliant CBD products, because your destination country’s entry requirements may involve independent drug testing.
Clearance Timelines
Single bhang drink (casual): urine clearance 3-7 days for non-regular users. Regular bhang during a festival (several days): 10-21 days. Legal CBD products (<0.3% THC): generally below standard detection thresholds, but trace detection possible in sensitive tests for 1-3 days. Any illegal cannabis use (ganja, charas): casual use clears in 3-7 days in urine; heavy regular use may require 30 days. Blood THC: clears within 24 hours of any use. Hair follicle: detects all use up to 90 days regardless of quantity.
