NOTICE: Tolerant or Legal Framework
Spain decriminalised personal cannabis in 1992. Cannabis Social Clubs operate legally. Ibiza party culture meets the Spanish cannabis framework. What you need to know.
Cannabis Laws in Ibiza 2026
Spain has decriminalised personal cannabis possession and use in private spaces since 1992, with the Organic Law on the Protection of Citizen Security (Ley Mordaza) 2015 setting the current fine framework. Possession in public carries fines of 601 to 30,000 euros depending on amount and circumstances; there is no criminal record for first personal possession. Private use and cultivation in non-visible spaces is decriminalised. Cannabis Social Clubs operate under Spanish association law as private, member-only, non-commercial entities. The Balearic Islands (including Ibiza) are governed by the same national framework.
What Travellers Need to Know
Ibiza attracts around 3 million visitors annually, predominantly for its world-famous club and music culture. Cannabis is embedded in this scene. Social Clubs on the island provide the most legally secure access. The process typically involves showing a valid ID to an existing member who introduces you as a guest; you then join the association and can receive cannabis within the club's private premises. This is legally very different from buying on the street. Street purchases are common but inconsistently quality-controlled and carry greater legal exposure.
Ibiza Neighbourhood Guide
San Antonio is the main package tourism hub with intensive nightlife; cannabis use is highly visible but enforcement is also active during peak season. Ibiza Town (Eivissa) is the island capital with a sophisticated scene; the area around the port and Vara de Rey hosts club life. Playa d'en Bossa is beach-club territory adjacent to the airport; highly visible cannabis use. Sant Josep and northern villages like Santa Gertrudis have a more bohemian, local atmosphere. The south and west coasts are villa territory.
Safety Tips for Ibiza
Join a Cannabis Social Club rather than buying street cannabis. Confirm with your accommodation that consumption on the property is permitted. Never consume in public areas, on beaches, or near any area where minors are present. Cannabis on ferries (to Formentera or mainland) and in cars is illegal. Ibiza Airport (IBZ) is subject to national law; do not travel with cannabis to or from the island via the airport. The party atmosphere can lead to risk-taking; always stay within legal safe zones.
