Cannabis Laws for Visitors to Ann Arbor
Michigan passed Proposal 1 in November 2018, legalising recreational cannabis and launching retail sales in December 2019. For Ann Arbor specifically, the state legalisation brought formal legal status to a city that had operated informally tolerant for nearly five decades. The Michigan Marijuana Regulatory Agency (MRA) — now the Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) — oversees all licensing. See our Michigan cannabis laws guide for full detail.

Hash Bash: The World’s Longest-Running Cannabis Rally
Hash Bash is arguably Ann Arbor’s most famous export to global cannabis culture. Held on the first Saturday of April every year on the University of Michigan’s Central Campus Diag, it has run continuously since 1972 — predating federal DEA scheduling, outlasting five decades of drug war, and continuing seamlessly into the legal era.
The original 1972 Hash Bash was organised in response to John Sinclair’s imprisonment for possession of two marijuana joints (he had served two years of a 10-year sentence before John Lennon performed at a 1971 benefit concert and Sinclair was released days later). That same year, Ann Arbor’s city council voted to reduce cannabis possession to a $5 civil infraction — the first US municipality to do so.
In the legal era, Hash Bash has evolved from a protest event to a cultural festival. Speakers still address cannabis law and social justice; live music fills the afternoon; dozens of Michigan cannabis brands set up vendor booths on the Diag. Attendance has reached tens of thousands in recent years. The event remains one of the most authentic, historically grounded cannabis cultural experiences available anywhere in the world.
Planning Your Hash Bash Visit
- Date: First Saturday of April each year
- Location: University of Michigan Central Campus Diag, Ann Arbor
- Book accommodation 2–3 months in advance — all Ann Arbor hotels fill quickly
- Combine with the spring Ann Arbor Farmers Market and downtown cannabis dispensary visits
- Note: The Diag is University of Michigan property — cannabis consumption at the event itself is technically prohibited; the event is a celebration, not an open consumption gathering

Ann Arbor in the US Cannabis Tourism Landscape
Ann Arbor punches above its weight as a cannabis travel destination. A city of approximately 120,000 people, it has a cannabis cultural heritage matched only by San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury in US history. The combination of the Hash Bash tradition, Terptown’s craft-focused retail market, University of Michigan intellectual culture, and Michigan’s generous possession and home grow limits makes Ann Arbor a compelling stop for any serious cannabis traveller visiting the American Midwest.
Compare Ann Arbor with Denver (pioneer market, altitude), Seattle (Pacific Northwest craft focus), and Los Angeles (celebrity strain culture). For broader Midwest cannabis context, see US cannabis laws by state and our full cannabis travel directory.
