About Catalan Cannabis Society
The Catalan Cannabis Society was founded in 2011 with an explicit cultural mission alongside its practical one: to demonstrate that cannabis association culture in Spain could be rooted in specific local traditions, values, and aesthetics rather than the generic northern European or American models that dominated early discussions about the movement.
Sarria is the neighbourhood of choice for this project. Once an independent municipality absorbed by Barcelona in 1921, Sarria retains a distinctive character: quieter than the city below it, more residential, with a strong sense of local identity and a culture that prizes quality and discretion over spectacle.
The club's founding members included people with backgrounds in architecture, food and wine, and Catalan cultural institutions. These influences show in the framing of the cultivation programme as an expression of terroir-consciousness, the idea that local growing conditions and cultivation practices produce cannabis that is specific and irreproducible, like wine from a particular vineyard.
The club's grow operation makes deliberate use of Catalan-developed genetics alongside international varieties, and the cultivation notes provided to members include information about the growing environment and approach that most clubs never consider communicating.
How to Become a Member
Cannabis social clubs in Spain operate as private, non-commercial associations. To join Catalan Cannabis Society, you must:
- Get a referral from an existing member who can vouch for you personally.
- Complete the application process, including providing proof of adult status (18+) and Spanish residency or minimum stay documentation.
- Attend an orientation session covering Spanish cannabis law, the club rules, and responsible consumption guidelines.
- Pay the membership contribution (EUR 25-38/month), which funds collective cultivation and club operations.
This process is legally essential, not optional bureaucracy. Without genuine private membership, the collective consumption framework that permits these clubs to function would not apply.
Understanding Cannabis Social Clubs in Spain
Spain does not have legalised recreational cannabis. What exists instead is a legal grey zone rooted in the Spanish constitution's protection of private activity and personal autonomy. Cannabis social clubs frame collective cultivation and consumption as a private, associative activity rather than a commercial transaction. There are no sales, only shared access to collectively produced cannabis funded by member contributions.
Do not expect to simply arrive at a club and gain access. Genuine clubs are private by necessity, not by preference, and clubs that operate as quasi-public spaces risk prosecution.
