Super Skunk Strain Overview
Super Skunk was developed by Sensi Seeds in the early 1990s by crossing the legendary Skunk #1 with pure Afghani genetics. The goal was to enhance Skunk #1 with increased resin production, bulk, and resilience of the Afghani landrace — the result exceeded expectations. Super Skunk won the High Times Cannabis Cup in 1990 and remains one of Sensi Seeds' bestselling varieties.
The strain produces dense, resin-caked buds with a classic skunky aroma amplified to impressive levels. Effects are heavily indica: relaxing, body-focused, and sedative. THC sits at 18-20% with a smooth, earthy smoke. For related classic indica growing tips, see our Northern Lights guide and AK-47 guide.
Growing Conditions for Super Skunk
Super Skunk is one of the most robust and forgiving cannabis strains available — an excellent choice for beginners. It tolerates temperature fluctuations between 16-30°C without significant stress and handles minor nutrient imbalances readily. Ideal conditions are 20-26°C with 50-60% humidity in veg and 40-50% in flower.
The plant grows short and compact with strong lateral branching. It does not require aggressive training but responds positively to topping once in early veg to produce multiple main colas. Super Skunk is a moderate-to-heavy feeder: use a full-spectrum cannabis nutrient line at standard doses. It thrives in all growing mediums — soil, coco coir, and hydro all produce excellent results. A carbon filter is absolutely essential given the powerful aroma, as described in our grow room setup guide.
Flowering and Harvest
Super Skunk finishes in just 7-8 weeks of 12/12 — a fast turnaround ideal for commercial growers and those wanting multiple annual harvests. Outdoor harvest falls in late September. Indoor yields of 450-500g/m2 are consistent under a 600W HPS or equivalent LED setup.
The buds swell significantly in the final two weeks, becoming very dense and heavily coated in trichomes. Harvest when trichomes show 70-80% cloudy with some amber for the classic indica body effect. Dry at 15°C in a ventilated space. Cure in airtight jars for 4-6 weeks to mellow the harshness and develop the complex earthy-skunky flavor profile. The curing guide covers the full process.
Tips and Troubleshooting
Super Skunk is perhaps the most forgiving photoperiod strain for new growers. Its Afghani genetics give it exceptional tolerance to suboptimal conditions. Even in an imperfectly calibrated environment, it will produce respectable yields. Optimizing conditions dramatically improves results — the difference between 300g/m2 and 500g/m2 is largely down to light intensity and nutrient management.
The main issue experienced growers encounter is its extremely strong smell — plan your odor control strategy before the grow starts, not after. A carbon filter rated for 30% more than your tent volume is recommended. Super Skunk is rarely bothered by pests or disease, but dense buds can develop mold in humidity above 55% in late flower. Keep airflow strong and humidity low in the final 3 weeks for the cleanest harvest.
