Prague’s Cannabis Scene
Prague has long been one of Europe’s most cannabis-friendly capitals. The Czech Republic’s pragmatic approach to drug policy — decriminalising personal possession under 10 grams and home cultivation of up to 5 plants — has made Prague a destination for cannabis tourists since the early 2000s. The city’s combination of extraordinary architecture, rich cultural life, and relatively permissive cannabis environment creates a unique travel experience in Europe.
The Czech Cannabis Act, passed in April 2024, signalled a further shift toward a more regulated framework. While a fully licensed recreational market is still being developed, the act confirmed decriminalisation and created a pathway for medical cannabis. In the meantime, Prague’s grey-area cannabis café and CBD shop scene continues to operate with the pragmatic tolerance that has characterised Czech cannabis policy for over two decades.
Prague’s cannabis venues cluster in several neighbourhoods: the tourist districts of Staré Město (Old Town) and Nové Město (New Town/Wenceslas Square), the elegant residential Vinohrady, the alternative Žižkov, and the historic Malá Strana. Each neighbourhood produces a different cannabis retail character, from tourist-oriented to local and community-focused.
