About Boterwaag Coffeeshop Leiden
Boterwaag Coffeeshop has been operating in Leiden Binnenstad since 2001, taking its name from the historic butter weighing house tradition of the Dutch city centre. The shop has built a reputation over more than two decades as one of the finest coffeeshops in the Leiden region, attracting a loyal following of university students, academics, and visitors who appreciate a shop that takes its craft seriously.
The location in the historic centre puts Boterwaag within walking distance of the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, the Pieterskerk, and the Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe. The shop occupies a building appropriate to the neighbourhood: old brickwork, low ceilings, warm lighting.
The menu runs to between 14 and 22 varieties, with a strong emphasis on Dutch domestic cultivation and strain heritage. The staff are genuinely knowledgeable and can explain the provenance and characteristics of each variety on the menu. Hash selection is carefully curated with four to six options.
Leiden's historic centre is one of the most rewarding urban walking environments in the Netherlands: canals, historic facades, specialist bookshops, and a density of museums that reflects the city's centuries of intellectual life.
